Three years ago, 40 or so leading poets writing in English turned their hands to passages from Ovid in an impressive collective effort, ''After Ovid: New Metamorphoses.'' Hughes, England's poet laureate, was prominent among them,Ĭontributing four long poems. Yorkshire poetic dialect, deeply indebted to a Middle English if not Anglo-Saxon past, does not seem the obvious choice for conveying the sinuous rhythms of Ovid's Latin hexameter. Hughes, whose idiom and sensibility owe much to the harsh landscape of his northern English upbringing, is neither. In the sophisticated voice of late Augustan Rome, is both urban and urbane. ![]() Where Ovid is often ironic, his tone elusive, Hughes is serious to the point of earnestness. Vid and Ted Hughes do not seem, at first, a likely pairing. Ted Hughes brings to life the verse that has inspired poets from Chaucer to Shakespeare. ![]()
